Breast reduction surgery, also known as “mammoplasty”, is the procedure to reshape and reduce the size of the breasts.
Many women experience discomfort due to their large, heavy breasts that can cause neck, shoulders, and back aches, and some problem in posture. Sometimes, psychological issues such as lack of self-confidence and self-esteem may also arise. There is a limitation on participation in sports or other activities. Some women may also find that they are subject to unwanted attention or comments, they may especially feel self-conscious wearing swimsuits and other types of clothing.
The surgery itself involves removing breast tissue, fat and skin. After the excess tissue and skin have been removed, the skin is stitched to close the cuts. Sometimes the nipple and areola have to be removed and repositioned. Sometimes liposuction is used along with surgery. In case that the breast is composed mostly of fatty tissue, and excess skin isn’t a problem, liposuction alone may be enough for breast reduction.
This procedure is done in the operating theatre under general anaesthesia or sedation. There will be 7 to 14 days associated downtime for patients.
What To Expect After Surgery?
Most women experience breast pain and discomfort during the first few days. Swelling and bruising is also present and may last for several weeks. However, wearing a surgical bra 24 hours a day can help support the breasts while they heal and reduce swelling.
Normal activities will likely to resume after a couple of weeks to a month, unless those activities involve heavy lifting or strenuous exercise. It’s important to wear a bra that supports the breasts well, such as a sports or athletic bra.
After the swelling has completely subside, the body will feel much more balanced since the excess weight on the large breasts has been removed, thus will promote better posture. Alongside, having a good posture relieves the pressure from the neck, shoulders, and back making them less likely to become deformed and experience pain.
Women who have had undergone breast reduction surgery are often extremely satisfied with their breasts smaller, firmer, lighter, and more evenly proportioned. They feel more comfortable as the surgery usually relieves the physical discomfort and pain caused by large breasts giving a more comfortable feeling.
The results of breast reduction surgery are considered permanent. However, as a result of pregnancy, weight gain, or weight loss, the breasts may change its shape becoming either larger or smaller.
